TA Playlist game for August 2022 announced

The TA Playlist Team - July 29th 2022

Welcome back to another month of TA Playlist! In honour of the annual Bean Dive event, we spent the month of July under the sea exploring an abandoned research station in Soma, but now that July is drawing to a close, it’s time to come back to the surface and return to civilization. Well, ancient civilization, anyway.

For August, we took a theme originally suggested last year by MorseyBaby in the TA Playlist Game Suggestion Thread. Since August is named after the Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar, we chose four games with a Greco-Roman theme for this month’s poll. Admittedly, the original pitch was for Roman games only, but with Ryse: Son of Rome out of the running, since it was the featured Playlist game in February 2018, we decided to expand the field to include Greek-themed games as well.

Hades and Assassin's Creed Odyssey were locked in a tight battle for second place throughout the poll, with Sid Meier's Civilization VI bringing up the rear, but the winner and August 2022 TA Playlist game of the month is: The Forgotten City.

Beginning its life in 2015 as a Skyrim mod, The Forgotten City is the debut game of indie developer Nick Pearce and his newly formed studio, Modern Storyteller. The full game was published by Dear Villagers and released for PC and consoles in July 2021.

Awakening on the banks of the Tiber River near Rome, a cryptic stranger asks you to look for her friend in the ruins of an ancient city nearby. After falling down a well and stepping through a mysterious portal, you find yourself suddenly transported back in time to a small, isolated Roman city where the residents live under what they call “The Golden Rule.” By decree of the gods, if anyone in the city commits a sin, the entire city will be destroyed. Even more, it seems that someone is going to break the Rule soon, and you’ve only got until the end of the day to figure out who. Luckily, you can re-enter the portal and reset time to the moment of your arrival, allowing you to live the day over again, gather clues, and uncover the mysteries of the city’s inhabitants.

The Forgotten City currently holds a 4.06/5.00 community rating and is expected to take 8-10 hours to complete. Over 27,000 tracked TA users have played the game, with nearly 2,500 (9%) unlocking all 40 achievements to get the full completion. While it’s definitely worth playing through the loop a few times to experience the story for yourself, you’ll also want to check out the walkthrough by Apostle92627 to help you pick up the four missable achievements and make your way through the game as efficiently as possible.

It was a pretty close vote this month, with Hades and AC: Origins nipping at The Forgotten City’s heels all week, but the time-loop adventure game maintained a small lead from start to finish.
As always, you can earn credit for participation in this month’s TA Playlist by earning any achievement in the game during August or by commenting on either the Spoiler or Spoiler-free discussion forum threads, which will be generated at the beginning of the month.
