Microsoft "encouraged the console wars... to challenge each other"

According to former Xbox executive Peter Moore, Microsoft "encouraged" console wars in an effort to challenge both itself and Sony.

Moore commented on his Xbox experience during a Front Office Sport podcast (thanks, IGN), saying, "We encouraged the console wars, not to create division, but to challenge each other.”

Peter Moore was involved in the launch of the Xbox 360 during his time with the Xbox team. "We encouraged the console wars, not to create division, but to challenge each other. And when I say each other I mean Microsoft and Sony," Moore says. "If Microsoft hadn’t of stuck the course after the Xbox, after the Red Rings of Death, gaming would be a poorer place for it, you wouldn’t have the competition you have today.”

What do you think about the idea of console wars, and how prevalent it is nowadays? Do console wars help to raise motivation and promote ideas of rising to the challenge, like Moore suggests? Let us know what you think in the comments!
