Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta details officially revealed

Tom West - August 1st 2022

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II's open beta has now been detailed by Activision during the Call of Duty League Championship, and it'll be available on two separate weekends in September. Here's what we know. [updated]

Update: The recent Call of Duty League Championship saw Activision unveil the official dates (thanks, Eurogamer), which will take place in September, so we don't have long to wait.

Between September 16th and September 17th, early access players on PlayStation will have a chance to enjoy exclusive access to the open beta before all other PlayStation users join between September 18th and September 20th. Then, on the following weekend between September 22nd and September 23rd, the beta will be exclusively available to early access players on all platforms via cross-play before everyone jumps in between September 24th and September 26th.

If you weren't able to snag an early access code during the Call of Duty League Championship and would like to join for the early access period during the open beta, your only option now is to preorder the game ahead of the beta's start.

Original story: Activision is yet to announce the open beta details for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II's open beta, but according to Call of Duty leaker Ralphs Valve over on WhatifGaming last week, a two-week beta is apparently set to take place in September. As is customary with Call of Duty betas, there will be an early access period for players that have preordered the game, and you'll have a chance to win an early access code yourself on August 7th during the Call of Duty League Championship.

According to Valve's What if Gaming article (thanks, GamesRadar+), the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II open beta will take place over two weeks in "mid-to-late September." Initial open beta details on Amazon had suggested that the beta would take place in August but that was apparently an error, and August will instead be used for "an exclusive look at gameplay from Modern Warfare II’s more traditional game modes, new systems of play, and a few surprises."

The beta will reportedly kick off on September 15th until September 16th for early access PlayStation players, with all other PlayStation players being able to join between September 17th and September 19th. Between September 22nd and September 23rd, Xbox early access players will have a chance to join in the fun, with all other Xbox players welcome for the final few days between September 24th and September 26th. As always, though, it's worth taking this with a pinch of salt until Activision confirms the open beta details with an official announcement, but if it's true, you won't have long to wait until the game launches fully on October 28th.

If you'd like to be one of the players taking part in the open beta's early access period, the Call of Duty League Championship will be offering players who attend the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California, or watch at least 60 minutes of the Championship on August 7th, a chance to win an early access code via a random prize draw. It'll be the "biggest code drop in CDL history" apparently, so make sure you've signed in and linked your Call of Duty account to the Call of Duty League website prior to watching the championship to be in with a chance of winning.
