Vote now for August 2022's TA Playlist game

By The TA Playlist Team,
As you spend July facing the endless deep and the horrors within it in this month's TA Playlist game Soma, it's time to vote for the August TA Playlist game.

For August, we've gone with a suggestion originally pitched to us by MorseyBaby over in the TA Playlist Game Suggestion Thread. We've chosen four games with a Roman, or at least Classical (mainly Roman/Greek), connection for the month named after the first Roman Emperor, Augustus.

Before you all say it, we're aware that the perfect game for this month's theme does exist; however, Ryse: Son of Rome previously won a TA Playlist vote back in Feb 2018, so it's not eligible to be nominated again.

The four games we've chosen are as follows:

The Forgotten City

The Forgotten City

Kicking off our nominations is The Forgotten City, an adventure game developed by Dear Villagers that was originally released in July 2021, nearly a year ago at the time this article was published.

Starting life as a mod for Skyrim, The Forgotten City became so popular that it was developed into a game of its own. In it, you play as an unnamed character who's rescued from the River Tiber by a mysterious individual who asks you to find their friend in return for saving you. You find the nearby ruins, which send you to a fully restored city in the Roman Empire, governed by the Golden Rule, turning the entire city into gold if a single person commits a sin. Can you survive in this city?

The Forgotten City holds a 4.06 out of 5.00 rating here on TA, with a full competition coming in at 8-10 hours. It's been started by over 27,000 people, with nearly 10% of that number having completed it. The game can be found on Xbox Games Pass, as well as Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Although Hades was first released in 2020 on PC (developed by Supergiant Games), when it won many accolades and game of the year awards, it didn't make it to consoles until August 2021, when it landed straight into our laps through Game Pass.
A roguelike dungeon crawler, the game comes from the consistently critically acclaimed studio behind Bastion, Supergiant games, who sadly skipped Xbox for their subsequent releases, Transistor and Pyre. Thankfully, we don't get to miss out on the story of Zagreus, son of Hades, who must battle through the Underworld in an attempt to reach Mount Olympus. Being a roguelike, areas and enemies in the game are randomly determined, and death is to be expected. Lots and lots of bloody death. Although the consequence of death is the removal of weapon upgrades, the boosting Boon provided by one of Zagreus's Olympian friends and any of the obol currency collected, Zagreus can improve his changes in subsequent runs by unlocking abilities, weapons and more. This leads to an addictive, "just one more run" gameplay loop as players try and get that bit closer to Olympus each time they blast through the Underworld. As well as the gameplay, the story, world and art style are widely praised.

Hades holds an impressive 4.64/5 community rating on TA. Over 87,000 people have played it, and over 5,500 (6%) have completed it. The completion of this one is estimated to take 60-80 hours, and it can be found on Xbox Games Pass, as well as Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Sid Meier's Civilization VI

Sid Meier's Civilization VI Achievements

Our third choice is Sid Meier's Civilization VI. Developed by 2K games and released in late 2019, Civilization 6 is a classical turn-based strategy game and continues the long-running Civilization series. It is a much-loved series, and this instalment is no exception. In it, as with all the other games, you have direct control over a civilisation of your choosing, be it the Romans, Egyptians, Japanese or even the Mali, as you attempt to build an empire to stand the test of time. Explore a new land, research technology, conquer your enemies, and go head-to-head with history's most renowned leaders as you attempt to build the greatest civilization the world has ever known, along with facing a variety of scenario packs to truly test your mettle.

Sid Meier's Civilization VI has a 4.19/5.00 rating on TA. A grand total of 82 people out of the nearly 30,000 players have completed it, with the completion expected to take 80-120 hours with all the DLC packs included.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Shadow Heritage

Our final pick for this month is Assassin's Creed Odyssey Achievements, an open-world, action-RPG developed by Ubisoft and released back in 2018.

Set in 431 BCE in Ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War between the Delian League led by Athens and the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta, AC Odyssey is an island-hopping adventure that sees you playing as the descendant of the legendary Spartan King Leonidas while exploring the entire Greek Peninsula, tiny islands and all. With a choice of siblings as a male or female main character, Alexios or Kassandra, you get to explore this huge and beautiful area by land or by sea while trying to reunite your family, making many choices along the way.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey has a 4.53/5.00 rating on TA. With all the DLC included, it comes in as this month's longest game, even beating Civ 6, with a completion time of 12-150 hours, with just under 19,500 of the site's nearly 200,000 players having done just that.

Let us know which of these four games featuring a Roman or otherwise Classical theme you'd pick to play for August's TA Playlist. Thank again to MorseyBaby for the suggestion. Want to suggest a theme and/or games to us for the Playlist, do so here: TA Playlist Game Suggestion Thread

The TA Playlist is a monthly community event. Everyone votes on which of four games to play, and then we all play through it in the following month. There's a dedicated hub to discuss everything about the game, from story beats to gameplay tips – and of course, you can track your achievement progress during the month as well. TA Playlist was created by Mark Delaney and is now run by Miles, Nici and Chewie.
